An important member of ACS Material’s carbon series products is expandable graphite. [+] Read more
Expandable graphite, a synthesized intercalation compound of graphite, reacts to heat by expanding or exfoliating. The synthesizing of expandable graphite involves introducing various intercalation reagents to graphite flakes. These reagents migrate between layers of graphene within a stable graphite crystal. When exposed to temperature increases, these intercalation agents decompose into gases, creating high pressure within the graphene. This pressure eventually develops enough force to push the graphene layers apart in the “c” axis direction, increasing the volume and surface area of the graphite while lowering the density. The result is a flame-retardant material that is low cost and free from pollutants and heavy metals.
Applications for expandable graphite are numerous and varied including:
Insulation foam
Soft foams for use in furniture, mattresses, carpets, and other textiles
Coatings and casting powders
Plastic foils
Rubber products such as conveyer belts and pipe closing systems
Thermal additive
Fire-retardant additive
Milling and sieving
